The local variety theorem uses two-sided closure

This note checks Theorem 2.1#local-variety-theorem) and explains why the page differs from the slides.

Write $\Xi$ for the $\Sigma$-set of right congruences on $\Sigma^*$, with action $\rho\mapsto w^{-1}\rho$, where $u\,(w^{-1}\rho)\,v$ iff $wu\,\rho\,wv$. Hyperconnected quotients of $\mathcal E_{\mathrm{of}}$ correspond to action-closed filters $F$ of finite-index right congruences. Put

$$\mathbb L(F)=\{L\mid{\sim_L}\in F\},\qquad \mathcal T(B)=\text{the filter generated by }\{\sim_L\mid L\in B\}.$$

Then $\mathcal T\dashv\mathbb L$ between quotients and Boolean subalgebras of $\mathcal R$ closed under $a^{-1}L$.

  1. $\mathcal T\mathbb L=\mathrm{id}$. A finite-index right congruence $\rho$ satisfies $\rho=\bigcap_C{\sim_C}$ over its finitely many classes $C$, and ${\sim_C}\supseteq\rho$ because $\rho$ is a right congruence. So $F$ is generated by the $\sim_L$ it contains.
  2. $\mathbb L\mathcal T(B)$ is the closure of $B$ under right quotients. Indeed ${\sim_{L'}}\supseteq\rho$ iff $L'$ is a union of $\rho$-classes. For $\rho={\sim_{L_1}}\cap\dots\cap{\sim_{L_n}}$, the class of $u$ is $\{u'\mid u'^{-1}L_i=u^{-1}L_i\}$, a finite Boolean combination of the sets $L_ix^{-1}$. Conversely $Lx^{-1}$ is a union of $\sim_L$-classes.

Hence $\mathbb L$ is injective, with image exactly the local varieties: the Boolean algebras closed under $w^{-1}L$ and $Lw^{-1}$. The Galois connection is not an isomorphism onto all Boolean subalgebras of $\mathcal R$. For $\Sigma=\{a,b\}$, the subalgebra $B=\{\varnothing,\Sigma^*,a\Sigma^*,\{\varepsilon\}\cup b\Sigma^*\}$ is closed under $a^{-1}$ and $b^{-1}$. But $\mathbb L\mathcal T(B)$ contains $\{\varepsilon\}$, which is a class of $\sim_{a\Sigma^*}$.

So one can start from either side: $\mathcal T(B)=\mathcal T(\text{right-quotient closure of }B)$. The statement becomes an isomorphism once the right side is restricted to local varieties. Combined with the local Eilenberg theorem, hyperconnected quotients of $\mathcal E_{\mathrm{of}}$ then match the sets of $\Sigma$-generated finite monoids closed under quotients and subdirect products. This is the conjecture stated at the end of the Topoi of automata II draft.
